My First Act in the Ministry

June 1, 2016

I have been an ordained minister for sixteen years. When I was only 18, and a freshmen in the dorms of UC Santa Barbara, my dad had sent me a link to the website for the Universal Life Church, where he had just registered himself as a minister. I had friends in the room with me when I registered myself-- and them-- to be ministers as well. My own license printed out crooked, which I thought was hilarious, and I pinned it to my dorm room wall. This become one of those quirky facts about me that I could bring up at college parties to impress co-eds with: yes, this teenage punk girl who has already traveled Asia is also an ordained minister!

That must have been the impression she had when she met me a year later: Fadwa, or Fifi to friends, is one of my closest friends today. We shared a love for music (she too was once a teenage punk), graphic design and English literature, and she now is a brilliant web developer living in Chicago. When she began planning her elopement to Eddie, her boyfriend of six years, she remembered that I was an ordained minister and invited me to officiate their wedding!

The wedding took place at the Mural Room of the Santa Barbara Courthouse on May 28th, 2016. Witnessed by Fifi's mother and uncle, and my boyfriend Sean, the officiation shared between me and Eddie's friend Brian.

Cheers to the bride and groom!
